Awareness and Updates

11/21/2023: New upper respiratory Dog Illness

Over the past year, a new and unidentified respiratory illness has affected dogs across the United States. Recently, there have been case reports in certain areas of Florida. So far, no cases have been reported in our local areas, but the assumption is that the illness may spread at some point.

Respiratory illness is common in dogs and is typically self-limiting and resolves without treatment. However, this new illness is more severe and can result in pneumonia that can quickly become serious.

Unfortunately, since it is a new illness, researchers do not yet know what is causing it. The assumption is that it is spread by nose-to-nose contact, close proximity to coughing dogs, and/or shared water and food bowls. It does not appear to be passed to other species, just between dogs.

Until we know more, the best recommendations we can make are as follows:

  • keep your dogs away from group-dog situations, if possible

  • make sure they are current on their vaccines (these vaccines unfortunately will not protect them against this new bug, but they will help protect dogs as best as we can from other exploitive respiratory viruses/bacteria out there)

  • seek prompt veterinary care if your dog is experiencing cough, lethargy, or difficulty breathing.

Since the disease causing agent is unknown, any treatment of suspected cases would involve palliative or supportive care by addressing the symptoms. Palliative care supports the sick pet until their own immune defense mechanism can overcome the initial storm of a new infection.

We are informing our clients so that they can be aware of any changes in their pet's health and subsequently make informed decisions. We will continue to provide any new information that we become aware of.

01/01/2022 COVID-19 - Our Precautionary Measures

Update - November 29, 2021: It seems we are in a bit of a rollercoaster ride with the Corona Virus; We are asking that our clients be patient with us as we adjust to the changing conditions. In order to respond to the changing need for vaccine boosters and concerns about variants of the Corona Virus, we are askling that clients continue to wear face-masks inside the hospital as we operate at our normal capacity with no limitation on number of clients allowed inside. Thank you kindly for your understanding and coorporation.

Update - Starting May 3, 2021: We will be allowing a limited number of clients into the hospital (maximum of 3 clients in the lobby + 4 clients in our 4 exam rooms). Clients will be required to wear a mask at all times whether they are vaccinated or not, because of the Covid19 variants that are still spreading. Only one client should accompany their pet inside the exam room. When in the exam room, client must remain seated in order to allow for the minimum of 3 to 6 feet social distance. We will continue to have designated parking for drop-off and pick-up (including meds) only. All other clients must park elsewhere in the parking lot. Clients must wait outside or in their cars until allocated spacing is available based on your scheduled appoinment time. We thank you kindly for your understanding and coorporation.

Due to corona virus concerns and evidence of community spread in Broward County, we will be following CDC guidelines to minimize human-to-human contact.

If your pet requires medical attention, please call ahead and schedule an appointment. We will be limiting contact/interaction with our staff because if we get sick we will not be able to care for your pets! So please be mindful of our staff during these times and let us know ahead of time so that we can arrange to get your pet in safely and get them the care they need.

While we remain open for business, we are no longer allowing clients to enter the building. Only staff and pets will be allowed inside and the doors will be locked except for pet drop-offs and pickups. We are offering alternative options in place of our conventional appointments until the corona virus pandemic is under control:

Alternative Appointments

We are offering alternative options to our conventional appointments.

  • Telemedicine Appointments - These appointments are video conferencing sessions or audio visual consultation with our veterinarian. These appointments have limitations due to the lack of physical contact with your pet and the inability to perform diagnostics. There are, however, certain cases that are very suitable for this type of appointment and it is also the best way to prevent person-to-person contact while caring for your pet. You can call us first to determine if this type of appointment is suitable for your pet's issue. Click here for more about Virtual Care Appointments
  • Drop-off appointments - These appointments are the preferred method of care for your pets. This is the best way to reduce person-to-person contact while still getting our full range of available diagnostic and treatment for your pets. Please call ahead for appointments.
  • Delayed Appointments - Some appointments, such as routine preventive care, may not require immediate attention and may be rescheduled for multiple weeks past the required due date. In the case of vaccinations, their effectiveness diminishes slowly over time as protective antibodies are reduced.
  • Fillable Online Forms - We now offer most of our forms online with digital signature in order to reduce in-person contact and speed up documentation processes: Fillable Online Forms

How are Pets Impacted by the Covid-19?

  • Covid-19 stands for Corona Virus Disease 2019 and is caused by the virus called SARS-Cov-2 which stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2.
  • SARS-Cov-2 is a novel virus and we are still learning more information about its behavior, transmission, and life cycle. As such, information provided here may change in the future as more information becomes evident.
  • There are different types of corona viruses, and some may infect one species of animal and not another.
  • CDC is aware of a small number of mammal animals, including dogs and cats that have possibly been infected with the SARS-Cov-2 virus after exposure to sick people. It was first observed in big cats.
  • Limited information is available about infection in animals, but this is believed to be a one-way transmission.
  • So far, there is no evidence that sick dogs or cats can pass on the virus to infect a person.
  • Clinical signs thought to be compatible with COVID-19 for infection in animals include: fever, coughing, difficulty breathing / shortness of breath, lethargy, sneezing, nasal discharge, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • If your pet shows possible clinical signs of COVID-19, we will offer telemedicine first to further evaluate your pet then we will make a case by case decision.
  • The COVID-19 Corona Virus is able to survive for a relatively short period outside the body when it lands on inanimate objects, or on external surfaces of people and animals (including pets). The duration of survival of the virus depends on many factors including moisture (from ejected droplets or other source), dryness, chemical reagents that kill viruses, antimicrobial surfaces and more.
  • Out of an abundance of caution, DO NOT deliberately expose your pet to COVID-19.
  • For more up-to-date information go to this CDC website URL

Internal Measures to Help Prevent Spread of Coronavirus

We are doing our part to help employees reduce the likelihood for the spread of corona virus.

  • All employees are required to disinfect the exam rooms including door handles, surfaces, and objects (such as leashes) after each appointment. In addition, we disinfect the entire hospital at least twice daily.
  • Hand sanitizers are available for both clients and staff to use.
  • Employees are required to wash hands frequently and particularly before and after each appointment.
  • We placed signs throughout the hospital to encourage proper hygiene and minimize contact between staff (including handshaking).
  • Any staff member showing symptoms of illness is required to stay at home.
  • If employees, must go out in public for essential purposes, they are required to practice the 6ft social distancing
  • Staff has been provided with information so that they are equipped with the knowledge of the symptoms of the coronavirus as well as how it spreads, and what precautions to take.
  • We require all staff to wear face masks and protective eye wear and we are now encouraging employees to wear a face mask if they go out in public spaces.
  • Employees, even when at home, are expected to only go out for essential reasons such as food shopping, exercise, working at an essential business such as ours, etc
